How to Test a Ping Tree

This help article documents how to test a Ping Tree.  To test an individual Lead Point see How to Test a Lead Point and Add it to a Production Ping Tree.

Using the System Generated Test Form

There is a test tool located at https://YOURSUBDOMAIN.tslpingtree.net/testpost.ashx which you may use to generate a blank form to test your ping trees.  The form generates fields dynamically in a simple table format.  This test tool is most useful when combined with a third party web form testing tool or even a password manager such as RoboForm so that the fields can be automatically populated.

If the page displays without a way to enter tracking parameters then a tracking cookie was detected on your browser.  If you do not wish to use this tracking cookie for your test then click the "Start All Over" link next to the Click ID.

To test a Front Site:

When you operate the website that the visitor (a.k.a. user or visitor or prospect or lead) sees and interacts with, or when you drive traffic to your affiliates' such websites, then we call each such site a "Front Site".

First fill out the Ping Tree ID field plus either the Click ID -or- the Promotion ID field.  If filling out the Promotion ID field you may also fill out the Site, Affiliate, or Sub IDs fields to get the desired tracking signature.  Click the "Post Back to Self" button to move to the next step where the ping tree behavior override fields and the ping tree specific form fields are displayed.

To test a Headless Site:

When you and/or your affiliates post pre-validated leads directly to some ping tree in your account and only there is only one opportunity for an accept, decline, or error (versus on a Front Site where a visitor may correct errors and resubmit, e.g.) then we call each instance a "Headless Site".  You typically provide posting specifications to affiliates for Headless Sites and you either play the role of a lead aggregator where you start a ping tree to post to many potential buyers, you filter and gather leads for just one buyer, or you take in leads for your own use.

Only fill out the Ping Tree ID field and then click the "Post Back to Self" button.  On the next page you will be allowed to fill out the Promotion ID and other tracking signature fields along with ping tree behavior override fields and the ping tree specific form fields.

Please note that when you submit this form as far as the system is concerned you are posting a PRODUCTION lead.  If you wish to notify the system that this is a TEST lead then use the technique documented in the next section.

Using the Special Test Mode Trigger Value

When using the submit.ashx handler to post a lead to the system you may notify the system that the lead is a test lead by supply the string "testtest" (case insensitive) anywhere in the post.  It can be all or part of a parameter name or it can be all or part of a parameter value.

When submit.ashx runs in test mode no payouts will be issued and ping trees will not run.  What will run are:

  1. any Field Validations attached to the Fields on the Form for the given Ping Tree,
  2. Required/Optional settings for the Fields on the Form,
  3. data type conversions for the Fields on the Form,
  4. any Filters you have defined at the Global level,
  5. any Filters you have defined and attached to the specified Promotion, and
  6. any Filters you have defined and attached to the specified Ping Tree.
